In China, Singles’ Day, always celebrated on November 11th, is much more than a date to celebrate the pride of being single: it is the biggest shopping festival in the country in the world. 5 times bigger than Black Friday, Singles Day is a phenomenon that breaks incredible sales records every year.

In 2019, purchases on Singles’ Day reached $38 billion, versus $10.4 billion for Amazon Prime Day and $7 billion for Black Friday.
Between 2009 and 2019, the shopping event grew more than 5,400 times.
Also in 2019, Alibaba sold US$13 billion, the equivalent of all e-commerce sales in Brazil in the same year.
But why is Singles’ Day always celebrated on November 11th? A common wedding day for thousands of Chinese, the date was chosen because the number 1 represents a single person. More recently, Alibaba has explored 11/11 in a different way than it had been doing, removing the negative charge from those who are alone and increasing attention and sales among those who already have a pair.
