Have you ever heard of lithium-ion batteries? Called new oil or white oil, they are crucial for global technological-industrial development and essential for the operation of the simplest smartphones and even the latest electric vehicles. China dominates 73% of its production, against 12% of the United States, and, since 2012, it has supported the industry with investments totaling more than US$ 10 billion.

China is responsible for 80% of the refining of essential raw materials for the production of lithium-ion batteries
The Chinese demand for lithium-ion batteries today is 72GWh
The size of China's lithium-ion battery market is expected to reach US$23 billion by 2024
The Chinese leadership is explained not only by massive investments in this industry but also by China’s wide access to essential raw materials for the production of batteries. This is because many Chinese companies control significant parts of projects and mines in strategic countries such as Chile, Argentina, and Congo. In addition, the country produces 60% of the world’s graphite, and 80% of cobalt refining is also done there.
Among the 90 battery manufacturers (2018) operating in the country, Ganfeng Lithium, the largest producer of lithium compounds in China, and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), the largest manufacturer of EV batteries in the world, stands out with more than 24% of the market.
