With 20% of the world’s population, but only 9% of the planet’s arable land, China faces a major challenge: the mismatch between its food demand and its domestic production. Between 2003 and 2017, China’s food imports grew from US$14 billion to US$104.6 billion.
By way of comparison, of the US$39.5 billion imported in soybeans, US$28.6 billion came from Brazil, which concentrates 3% of the world’s population and 4% of arable land. Even if all of China used all of its northern and northeastern lands for soybean production, it would still be insufficient.
