Digital communication: main field in which China applies for patents
Half of the companies that apply for patents are Chinese (2019)
59,000 patents were registered for a single year (2019)
Patent ownership is seen as a great indicator of a country’s industrial know-how and innovative capacity. After decades of rising positions, today, China is the country that most applies for and registers patents in the world, largely due to government incentives to promote innovation and the development of future technologies.
Huawei is a great exponent in this field, placing itself as the most illustrative case of Chinese leadership. The well-known telecommunications company is ranked first in patent registration, ahead of Mitsubishi, Samsung, and major US technology companies.
In general, the government provides direct subsidies on patent filing fees and rewards for granted patents. It is, therefore, in this context that a large number of patent registrations by Beijing must be understood, as well as the main challenge that results from these actions: the disposal of irrelevant patents.
