The Chinese space program is flying higher and higher, literally. In late April 2021, China launched the first of 11 missions needed to build and supply its first permanent space station. The following month, the Chinese probe Tianwen-1 landed on Mars. All of this comes shortly after the Asian country became the first to make a successful landing on the “hidden side” of the Moon.
Discover the main milestones of the Chinese space program and understand how Beijing is gaining relevance in the aerospace field in our infographic.

Chinese moon missions began in 2007 with the Chang’e program. Named after the Chinese goddess of the Moon, there have already been five missions under the responsibility of the CNSA, the Chinese space agency. These missions should continue to take place until at least the year 2030. The objective is to establish a lunar base, making possible the permanent Chinese presence on the natural satellite.
More recently, the country has been consolidating itself as a pioneer in expeditions to Mars. After a failed attempt in 2011, in partnership with Russia, the country became the 3rd country to land on the planet in May 2021, with the deployment of the Tianwen-1 probe.
