In 1995, the sum of China’s merchandise imports and exports totaled US$280.9 billion, representing 3% of global trade. In 2018, this sum jumped to US$4.6% trillion, being 12.4% of global trade.
Most of China’s surplus comes from trade with the US and Hong Kong. Their biggest deficits come from countries that produce commodities that are important to China and its production.
Regarding trade with Brazil, the year 2020 broke records, increasing the importance of this trade partnership. Beef exports grew 65%, generating more than US$ 3.6 billion for Brazil. On the import side, the purchase of Chinese medicines and pharmaceutical inputs exceeded US$600 million, a growth of 70%. Altogether, the Sino-Brazilian trade balance generated a surplus of more than US$30 million for Brazil.
