50% of Chinese tech startups have women on their boards
61% of self-made billionaires are Chinese
Women earn 16% less than men
Encouraging numbers to mingle with others is less promising when one observes that few women are working directly in STEM in the country – only 10% of Chinese programmers are women – and that discriminatory and sexist practices still permeate the Chinese technology industry.
The giant Chinese companies called BAT (Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent) together have 24 executives on their Boards. Among them, only 1 is a woman (Alibaba). Among the biggest challenges, it is possible to highlight the difficulty in accessing investors and changing the corporate culture.
Despite the many challenges, some Chinese already stand out for their work in the area, such as Maggie Wei Qu, CFO of Alibaba, Jean Liu, president of Didi, and Liu Zhen, former VP of ByteDance.
